Approximately 90% of the world’s rice production and consumption takes place in the Asia-Pacific region, where rice is a staple food for most of the population. Interestingly, this region is also home to about 60% of the world’s diabetic patients. Due to this, many doctors often advise diabetic patients to limit their rice intake. Amidst these concerns, a renowned research institute in the Philippines has announced a breakthrough, claiming to have developed a new variety of rice that could potentially reduce the risk of diabetes.
Dr. Nese Srinivasasulu, the lead scientist from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, mentioned that this innovative rice variety will soon be cultivated in India as well. According to reports, IRRI plans to introduce this diabetes-friendly rice variety across various countries in Asia and Africa by 2025. This development could be a game-changer for millions of rice consumers, especially those concerned about their blood sugar levels.
