Gold Mine Collapse in Mali Kills 42
Deadly Mine Collapse Raises Safety Concerns in Mali’s Gold Industry

Once again, a tragic incident has occurred in Mali, shaking the entire nation. A gold mine has collapsed, claiming several lives. This incident took place in the Kenieba district, creating a chaotic atmosphere. According to reports, this is the second major accident of the year.
Late at night, the collapse of the mine in Bilali Koto, Dibia, was reported, resulting in the deaths of 42 people and injuring many others. Kenieba’s state official confirmed the incident. Mohamed Dicko told the Associated Press on Sunday that 42 deaths had been confirmed. Commenting on the accident, community leader Falaie Sissoko stated, “This accident happened yesterday (Saturday). The landslide occurred at sites operated by Chinese nationals.”
Dicko mentioned that authorities are still trying to determine whether the mine was legal or illegal. This is the second such incident in Mali in less than a month. On January 29, a landslide in the Koulikoro region killed several miners, most of whom were women.
Mali, Africa’s third-largest gold producer, frequently witnesses such accidents. Earlier this year, a similar tragedy claimed over 70 lives. Following the incident, the Ministry of Mines expressed “deep regret” and urged miners and local communities to “follow safety regulations.”
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, gold remains Mali’s most significant export, accounting for over 80% of total exports in 2021. More than 2 million people, or over 10% of Mali’s population, rely on the mining sector for their livelihood.
