IHRC Urges United Nations to Intervene in Balochistan Crisis

May 12, 2025 – Geneva/New York
In a significant appeal to the global community, the International Human Rights Council (IHRC) has called on the United Nations to take urgent action on the long-standing human rights crisis in Balochistan. A formal letter, jointly signed by IHRC Founder Chairman Dr. Sunny Shah and High Representative for Foreign Affairs Dr. Haissam BouSaid, was addressed to both UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.
The communication highlights decades of suffering endured by the people of Balochistan, who have continuously fought for their fundamental rights—including the right to self-determination and control over their ancestral land and natural resources. The letter underscores grave concerns such as enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and widespread suppression of civil liberties in the region.
“Despite repeated calls for justice, the situation remains dire, with local populations living under constant fear and without access to fair representation or legal recourse,” the IHRC stated.
In its letter, the IHRC has made three key appeals to the United Nations:
- Appoint a UN Special Rapporteur to investigate and report on the human rights situation in Balochistan.
- Facilitate dialogue among relevant parties to seek a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict.
- Ensure civilian protection and restoration of fundamental rights and freedoms for the Baloch people.
The IHRC emphasized the United Nations’ moral responsibility as a global guardian of peace and human rights to act in such humanitarian crises.
“The people of Balochistan deserve to live in dignity, with their voices heard and their rights protected,” the appeal concluded. This latest appeal follows growing international concern over the situation in Balochistan, where human rights organizations have repeatedly flagged violations and urged global oversight. The IHRC’s direct communication with top UN officials adds further weight to calls for international engagement in resolving the crisis.
