IOM Faces Budget Cuts, Migration Aid at Risk

IOM Implements Structural Changes Amid 30% Funding Cut for 2025

According to a UN agency, financial aid from the United States has also decreased, raising concerns about the impact on several projects. In a statement released on Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that these budget cuts would have a serious impact on migrant communities, worsen humanitarian crises, and weaken essential support systems for displaced populations. As part of the measures adopted by the UN agency, some projects are being scaled down or shut down, affecting 6,000 employees worldwide.

Additionally, structural changes have been implemented at the IOM headquarters, leading to a 20% reduction in staff, affecting more than 250 employees. The UN agency emphasized that these measures are necessary to continue delivering lifesaving assistance to migrants and vulnerable communities worldwide. “Our goal is to advance solutions for displaced populations and support governments in managing migration for the benefit of societies and migrants,” the statement added.

The UN migration agency was established by its member states and operates on a project-based model, launching initiatives based on global humanitarian needs. However, the depletion of financial resources for critical projects could have long-term consequences, particularly for marginalized communities struggling with limited resources. Under the current circumstances, some positions are being relocated to regional offices and missions with lower costs. Additionally, responsibilities are being reorganized, and coordination with other humanitarian organizations is being strengthened.

The UN agency stated that all these decisions have been communicated to member states. In 2022, the IOM Council initiated budget reform efforts, and these measures are built upon that foundation. The migration organization noted that these changes would help reduce costs while ensuring continued support in crisis-affected areas. Furthermore, efforts will be made to explore new funding sources, with an emphasis on accountability and oversight.

The UN agency acknowledged the impact of these decisions on employees who have dedicated many years to IOM’s mission. It expressed gratitude for their commitment and service in supporting migrants and displaced communities worldwide. At a time when forced displacement is at a record high due to conflicts, climate disasters, and economic instability, migration remains crucial for global security, stability, and sustainable development. The IOM urged the international community to recognize the importance of migration management and ensure it remains a central topic in global policy discussions.
