UN Chief Condemns Attacks on Peacekeepers in Lebanon

"UN Secretary-General Calls for Accountability and Protection of Peacekeepers Amid Rising Tensions in Southern Lebanon"

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned recent attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. The incidents occurred amidst rising tensions in the region, which have been exacerbated by ongoing conflicts. The peacekeepers, part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), have been stationed in the area to maintain stability along the border with Israel.

In a statement, Guterres expressed deep concern over the security of the peacekeeping forces, stressing that any attacks on UN personnel are unacceptable and violate international law. He called on all parties involved to respect the mandate of UNIFIL and ensure the safety of its personnel as they carry out their mission of peace and security in the region.

The attack comes amid a fragile situation in southern Lebanon, where clashes and skirmishes have periodically occurred. UNIFIL, established in 1978, has been working to monitor ceasefires and assist the Lebanese government in maintaining peace and security along the border with Israel.

Guterres urged all parties to engage in dialogue and de-escalate tensions to prevent further violence, reaffirming the UN’s commitment to peace in the region. The attacks have sparked international concern, with calls for accountability and protection for UN personnel who risk their lives in volatile zones to maintain peace.
