A massive wildfire in the forests of Los Angeles, California, has spread rapidly, fueled by strong winds. The uncontrollable blaze has reached nearby residential areas, burning down several homes and vehicles. Thousands of residents have evacuated their homes to escape the advancing fire.
From the Pacific Coast to Pasadena, thousands of firefighters were working on Wednesday to contain at least three separate wildfires. Authorities ordered tens of thousands of residents in the Los Angeles region to evacuate. So far, the fire has claimed at least five lives.
The devastating wildfire has destroyed homes of both ordinary people and celebrities. Famous figures such as Billy Crystal, Cary Elwes, Mandy Moore, and Paris Hilton have lost their homes to the blaze. Residents across California are battling the fire that has caused widespread destruction, blocking roads and leaving many homeless.
Actor Billy Crystal and his wife Janice lost their 45-year-old home in Pacific Palisades. They had lived there since 1979. Crystal expressed his grief, saying, “Janice and I have lived in this home since 1979. We raised our children and grandchildren here. Every corner of our house held special memories for us. Although we are heartbroken, the love of our family and friends will help us get through this.”
Thousands of people in Hollywood Hills were also asked to evacuate due to a separate wildfire named the Sunset Fire. The evacuation order was issued for areas west of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Mulholland Drive, with warnings for nearby residents to stay prepared.
In response to the crisis, Uber has offered free rides worth up to $40 to help affected residents reach safer locations. This service is specifically for those living in fire-affected areas.
President Joe Biden has signed an emergency disaster declaration, making federal aid available for the affected areas in Los Angeles County. The assistance includes temporary housing, home repairs, and other support programs.
Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone announced that firefighting teams from several states are being deployed. These include 60 teams from Oregon, 45 from Washington, 15 from Utah, 10 from New Mexico, and several from Arizona.
