Sudanese Military Plane Crashes in Omdurman, Killing 46 Amid Intensifying Civil War

A Sudanese military aircraft crashed in the city of Omdurman, reportedly killing at least 46 people. The army and health officials provided information about the incident on Wednesday, February 26. According to an AP report, a statement from the military confirmed that several soldiers and civilians lost their lives in the crash. However, no details have been shared regarding the main cause of the accident.

As per the Sudanese Army’s report, the Antonov military aircraft crashed on Tuesday, February 24, while taking off from Wadi Sayyidna Airbase.

Earlier, Sudan’s Health Ministry stated that the bodies of those killed in the crash were transported to Nau Hospital in Omdurman. Additionally, five civilians were injured and are currently receiving treatment.

Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war since 2023. The conflict between the army and the notorious paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has escalated into full-scale war. This battle has devastated urban areas, particularly the Darfur region, leading to ethnic violence and mass atrocities, including sexual violence. The United Nations and international human rights organizations have condemned these incidents as crimes against humanity and war crimes.

In recent months, Sudan’s military has intensified operations against RSF, particularly in Khartoum and other regions. RSF currently controls most of Western Darfur. They claimed responsibility for shooting down a Sudanese military aircraft in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province, on Monday, February 23.

Such incidents are further complicating Sudan’s crisis, posing serious threats to civilians’ safety and peace in the region.
