U.S. Deports Immigrants to India

U.S. Begins Mass Deportation of Immigrants, First Flight to India Under Trump’s Order

Following President Donald Trump’s directive, the U.S. has launched a large-scale deportation campaign against undocumented immigrants. As part of this operation, a U.S. military aircraft carrying deported individuals departed for India on Monday. According to a Reuters report citing a U.S. official, the C-17 military transport aircraft is en route to India and is expected to arrive in no less than 24 hours.

This marks the first deportation flight to India since Trump’s return to the White House. President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have expressed concerns over illegal Indian immigration during discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Previously, India had agreed to repatriate its undocumented nationals, with reports indicating that up to 18,000 illegal immigrants could be returned.

To enforce the crackdown, the Trump administration has sought military assistance, deploying additional troops along the U.S.-Mexico border. Military aircraft are being used for deportation flights, and special holding facilities have been set up on military bases. Deportation flights have already transported undocumented migrants to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. India, being one of the farthest destinations, presents a logistical challenge for these operations.

After his inauguration last month, President Trump discussed immigration policy during his first phone call with Prime Minister Modi. He later stated that India would “do the right thing” when it comes to accepting deported nationals. The White House described the conversation as positive, emphasizing mutual cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations.
