Government and TRAI Strengthen Efforts to Combat Fake Calls Amidst Ongoing Challenges

Stricter Regulations and Enhanced Accountability for Telecom Companies in Addressing Fraudulent Calls

Despite numerous efforts by the government, the problem of fake calls continues to persist, increasing the liability of telecom companies. TRAI has established a provision to blacklist fake callers for a minimum of two years, ensuring consumer protection.

TRAI’s Strict Measures
TRAI has implemented stringent measures against fake calls, particularly concerning telemarketing and promotional calls. It has been noted that many companies are engaged in finding new ways to conduct fraudulent calls, necessitating the creation of new regulations. Currently, the misuse of robocalls, voice calls, and pre-recorded calls has increased, prompting the development of an action plan.

Organization of the Meeting
TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti convened an important meeting on this subject, attended by representatives from several major telecom companies. The meeting focused on discussing strategies to amend regulations and curb fake calls.

Consensus Decision
In the absence of representatives from Reliance Communications and MTNL, all other telecom companies reached a consensus on the proposal to take action regarding regulatory violations. Following this agreement, immediate action will be initiated, and the relevant companies will be blacklisted.
