International Human Rights Council Sikkim State Rescues Mentally Challenged Woman from MG Marg
24.07.2024
The International Human Rights Council (IHRC) Sikkim State has successfully rescued Dewki Tamang, a mentally challenged woman aged approximately 40 years, who had been wandering around MG Marg for several days without a place to stay.
The rescue operation was led by Robin Rai, the State Incharge of IHRC Sikkim, along with his dedicated team members Mintuk Dolma Lasopa, Indra Chettri, Chitrakala Subba, Krish Shah, Dr. Prakash Koirala, and others.
Following the rescue, Dewki was taken to CRH Manipal Hospital, Tadong, for medical treatment. She has been examined and is currently admitted for further care.
In a statement to the media, Robin Rai highlighted a significant issue concerning the lack of permanent shelters for rescued individuals with mental health challenges. He noted, “There is a huge problem when it comes to providing permanent shelter to people who are being rescued and are mentally unstable, as there are not enough shelter homes for them. IHRC Sikkim has rescued and treated many such individuals in the past, but due to the unavailability of shelter homes, many of them become stranded again.”
He also mentioned that IHRC Sikkim is planning to start a temporary shelter home specifically for women to address this pressing need.
He urged the government to address this matter seriously and take the necessary actions to provide adequate shelter facilities.
The International Human Rights Council extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Sikkim Police, CRH Manipal, and the public for their support in today’s rescue operation.
