Maruti e-Vitara Unveiled: EV Battle Heats Up

Maruti Enters EV Market, Challenging Tata and Mahindra

India’s largest automobile company, Maruti, unveiled its first electric car, the e-Vitara, at the 2025 Auto Expo. While Tata and Mahindra have already launched multiple EVs—especially the Nexon EV, which has gained significant popularity—Maruti’s entry into the segment has intensified the competition. Until now, the electric vehicle (EV) race in India was mainly between Tata and Mahindra, but with the e-Vitara’s reveal, the competition has become a three-way battle. It remains to be seen which of these companies will emerge as India’s equivalent of Tesla.

Before Maruti’s entry into the EV segment, Tata and Mahindra largely controlled pricing strategies, keeping their EVs more affordable than foreign competitors like MG. However, Maruti has always been known for its budget-friendly cars, catering to the mass Indian market. With Maruti stepping into the EV space, the market dynamics are set for a major shift.

Maruti Suzuki India claims that the e-Vitara is built on the HEARTECT-e platform, specifically designed for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). This technology enhances safety features while ensuring a superior driving experience with state-of-the-art innovations.

Meanwhile, Tata’s Curvv EV offers two battery pack options:

  • 45kWh battery: Delivers up to 502 km range
  • 55kWh battery: Delivers up to 585 km range

In real-world conditions, customers can expect a range of 400-425 km. The Curvv EV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 160 km/h. Additionally, its 1.2C fast-charging capability allows it to gain 150 km of range in just 15 minutes.

The Curvv EV starts at ₹17.49 lakh (ex-showroom), with the top variant priced at ₹21.99 lakh. Maruti has yet to reveal the official pricing of the e-Vitara, but its entry into the market is expected to disrupt the EV pricing landscape in India.
