Stampede at Mahakumbh: 30 Dead, 60 Injured on Mauni Amavasya

A stampede broke out during the Mauni Amavasya holy dip at the ongoing Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, resulting in 30 fatalities and 60 injuries. Authorities confirmed that among the deceased were four pilgrims from Karnataka, including a mother and daughter from Belagavi.

DIG Mahakumbh Vaibhav Krishna stated that 25 victims have been identified, while the remaining five are yet to be confirmed. Among them, four were from Karnataka, one from Assam, and one from Gujarat. 36 injured people are receiving medical treatment. Officials clarified that no VIP protocol was in place during the incident. A helpline number (1920) has been issued for updates on the injured.

Judicial Inquiry Ordered

The Chief Minister has ordered a three-member judicial commission led by former judge Harsh Kumar, along with ex-DG V.K. Gupta and retired IAS officer D.K. Singh. The commission will submit its findings within a set timeline. The police will also conduct an in-depth investigation into the cause of the tragedy.

Additionally, the Chief Secretary and DGP have been instructed to visit Prayagraj on Thursday to review the situation and submit a report. The government has announced ₹25 lakh compensation for each victim’s family.

Expressing deep sorrow, the Chief Minister said, “Despite multiple review meetings, how did this tragedy occur? A thorough probe will be conducted.” He emphasized that all agencies, including Mela Authority, administration, police, NDRF, and SDRF, had been on high alert. However, further enhancements in crowd management will be examined.
