Rising Persecution in Bangladesh and Syria
Minorities Targeted Amid Political Upheaval in Both Nations
In Bangladesh, following the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government and her exile, attacks on Hindus escalated. Hindus were targeted, and a Hindu saint was imprisoned without charges, with multiple bail pleas rejected. The situation is drawing parallels with Syria, where a similar upheaval is unfolding after the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad, who is currently in exile in Russia.
In Syria, radical groups have begun targeting minorities. In the Christian-majority town of Sukaylabiyah in central Syria, extremists set a Christmas tree ablaze just before Christmas, triggering widespread protests. Thousands of Christians took to the streets of Damascus, voicing their fears about their future in the country. The incident has heightened concerns among the Christian community about their safety and prospects in Syria.
