Suspected HMPV Case Reported in Bengaluru

Respiratory Virus Poses High Risk to Children and Immunocompromised Individuals

A report from Bengaluru suggests that an 8-month-old baby has shown symptoms of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). While the hospital has not officially confirmed the case, private lab tests reportedly indicated HMPV infection. Karnataka’s health department has yet to verify the case, with an official stating they trust the accuracy of private lab results but will wait for further confirmation.

What is HMPV?

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that typically causes mild flu-like symptoms. It spreads rapidly during winter and early spring through coughing, sneezing, contaminated surfaces, or close contact with infected individuals. Common symptoms include:

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • In severe cases: Wheezing or difficulty breathing

Children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe complications, such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis.

Key Concerns

Unlike other respiratory illnesses like RSV, measles, and mumps, HMPV has no vaccine or specific antiviral treatment. Mild cases can be managed with rest and hydration, but severe infections may require hospitalization and oxygen therapy.

Discovered by Dutch researchers in 2001, HMPV has since been identified as a significant cause of respiratory issues, particularly during colder months. According to the American Lung Association, it remains a notable threat, especially to young children.
