Students will soon be able to complete three- and four-year degree courses ahead of schedule. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is preparing to allow students to finish their degree programs before the stipulated duration. UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar shared this update on Thursday. Additionally, students will have the option to extend their three-year degree by one more year. The policy will also introduce provisions for multiple entry and exit points throughout the course.
Speaking at the Southern Zone Conference for Autonomous Colleges on implementing the National Education Policy 2020, Kumar announced plans to roll out this initiative starting the 2025-26 academic session. Detailed guidelines regarding the policy are expected to be released soon.
He emphasized that students who demonstrate the ability to complete their degree faster than usual will be permitted to do so. “In the coming years, capable students can finish their degree programs in a shorter time frame, saving six months to a year,” Kumar stated. The new scheme also benefits those who may need more time to complete their studies, offering flexibility to take breaks during the course.
This initiative is based on recommendations made by a committee led by IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti. Kumar assured that comprehensive guidelines for the new framework will be published shortly.
