UN Chief Urges Restraint Amid Syrian Crisis

"Calls for Inclusive Political Transition and Lasting Peace"

In the early hours of Sunday, amid reports of rebel fighters seizing control of Damascus and President Bashar al-Assad fleeing the country, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement emphasizing the importance of restraint and avoiding violence during this critical juncture.

In recent days, armed groups, including Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a terrorist organization banned by the Security Council, launched large-scale attacks on Syrian government-controlled cities such as Aleppo, Homs, and Hama in northwestern Syria, capturing one city after another.

Secretary-General Guterres underscored the need for calm during this sensitive time, reminding the global community that Syria has endured nearly 14 years of devastating war. However, he expressed hope, stating that the Syrian people now have a historic opportunity to move toward a stable and peaceful future.

He emphasized that rebuilding Syrian institutions and introducing systematic political reforms remains a significant task ahead. According to Guterres, Syria’s future must be determined by its own citizens. The UN Special Envoy will continue engaging with all parties to facilitate this process.

“The rights of all Syrians, without discrimination, must be safeguarded,” he stated.

The Secretary-General also stressed the importance of ensuring the security of all embassies and consular offices and respecting international law regarding diplomatic staff.

“We need the support of the international community to guarantee that any political transition process is inclusive, comprehensive, and addresses the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian population,” he added.

He reiterated the need to restore Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity.

Paying tribute to those who have borne the brunt of the violent conflict, Guterres reaffirmed his solidarity with the Syrian people in their pursuit of justice, freedom, prosperity, and reconciliation.

“This is the only path that can lead Syria toward lasting peace,” he concluded.
