UN Criticizes Force in Jenin

Calls for Accountability and Immediate End to Violence in Occupied Territories

UN spokesperson Thamin al-Khitani reported on Friday that disproportionate force was used during Israeli military operations around the Jenin refugee camp, including airstrikes and alleged shootings of unarmed residents. “Recent deadly Israeli actions raise serious concerns about the unnecessary and disproportionate use of force, involving methods and tools typically reserved for warfare,” he stated.

According to the OHCHR spokesperson, these actions violate international human rights laws, norms, and standards applicable during law enforcement operations. Since Tuesday, the UN has confirmed the deaths of 12 Palestinians, most of whom were unarmed, and injuries to 40 others, including a doctor and two nurses. Al-Khitani emphasized Israel’s responsibility under international law, as an occupying power, to protect civilians in occupied territories.

He called for investigations into allegations of unlawful killings and stressed that failure to ensure accountability only fuels further violence. The UN spokesperson highlighted Israel’s ongoing violations of international law and the lack of accountability for previous unlawful killings, which encourage recurring incidents. Over the past few days, the violence has displaced 3,000 families in Jenin, disrupting essential services like electricity and water supplies.

Israeli forces have also closed key entry points to Palestinian cities, including Hebron, significantly impacting daily life. Reports indicate new iron gates have been installed at entry points to several cities in the occupied West Bank. On Thursday, UN humanitarian coordinator Tom Fletcher warned the Security Council about record levels of casualties, displacement, and mobility restrictions in the West Bank since October 2023.

In addition to military operations, reports of attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian villages and vehicles have surfaced, resulting in injuries and property damage, including homes and vehicles set on fire. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have announced plans to expand settlements, which violate international law.

The UN has urged an immediate halt to violence in the West Bank, calling on all parties to prioritize peace. The spokesperson also called for a freeze on settlement expansion and the evacuation of all settlements in compliance with international law.
