‘Chhava’ Faces Controversy Over Historical Accuracy

Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna's 'Chhava' Faces Controversy Ahead of Release

The upcoming film Chhava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, is set to release on February 14 but has already sparked controversy. The film’s recently released trailer features Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji, shown dancing in a particular sequence, which has drawn criticism.

In the trailer, there is a scene where Vicky and Rashmika are seen playing traditional musical instruments and dancing together. The scene prominently features Lezim, a traditional musical instrument deeply tied to Maharashtra’s cultural heritage. However, this depiction has upset Maratha groups, who insist that such portrayals must respect historical accuracy and cultural sensibilities.

Former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhaji Raje Chhatrapati expressed his discontent, stating that while showing Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj playing Lezim is acceptable, depicting him dancing is inappropriate. “There are limits to how much creative liberty can be taken in filmmaking,” he emphasized.

According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, Sambhaji Raje revealed that he had spoken with the film’s director, Laxman Utekar. He suggested that the film should be reviewed by a historian to ensure accuracy. Being a Maratha himself, Utekar is expected to ensure the film avoids any misrepresentation of history.

The controversy escalated when some Maratha organizations were protesting at the historic Lal Mahal in Pune, objecting to the dance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj shown in the trailer of ‘Chhava’. They argued that such a portrayal diminishes the dignity of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, especially when this scene is after his coronation. The protesters demanded that the makers should show this film to historians and improve the film by consulting them. If this is not done, ‘Chhava’ will not be allowed to release in Maharashtra.
