Violence Erupts in Amravati Over Remarks Against Prophet Muhammad; 21 Injured in Clash with Police
"Protesters Demand Action Against Hindu Saint Yati Narsinghanand Maharaj, Leading to Violent Confrontation Outside Police Station"
A major uproar erupted in Maharashtra’s Amravati over religious comments made by Hindu saint Yati Narayanand against Prophet Muhammad. In protest, a crowd attacked the police, demanding a case be filed against Yati, leaving 21 people injured.
The police later confirmed that a case had been registered against Yati Narsinghanand Maharaj, a Hindu saint from Ghaziabad, for his controversial remarks against the Prophet. The violent incident occurred on Friday night outside Nagpuri Gate Police Station in Amravati, where at least 10 police vans were damaged.
An official stated that a case has been registered against 1,200 people, of whom 26 have been identified by the authorities.
Amravati’s Police Commissioner, Navinchandra Reddy, explained that a large crowd, involved in certain religious ceremonies, gathered outside the Nagpuri Gate Police Station at around 8:15 p.m., demanding action against Yati Narsinghanand Maharaj. The officer in charge informed the crowd that a First Information Report (FIR) had already been filed, and an investigation was underway, after which the crowd initially dispersed.
However, tensions escalated when a video of Yati’s remarks went viral, prompting the crowd to return to the police station. When police officers attempted to calm them, the crowd suddenly began throwing stones at the police.
Senior officers managed the situation and dispersed the crowd. Additional police forces were deployed to the scene. Some police officers and personnel were injured during the clash, and actions are being taken against the attackers. The police have issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code, which restricts the gathering of five or more people in the Nagpuri Gate area.
