India Issues Cybersecurity Warning for Microsoft Edge Users: Urgent Browser Update Recommended

"Security Flaws in Microsoft Edge Could Expose User Data to Hackers, CERT-In Urges Immediate Action"

The Government of India has issued a security warning for Microsoft Edge users, emphasizing cybersecurity concerns. This warning, released earlier this week, highlights security issues found in the Chrome-based Microsoft browser. CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) has given the browser a poor rating in this regard. The security agency has reported multiple vulnerabilities in Microsoft Edge that could potentially allow hackers to access sensitive data.

According to CERT-In’s bulletin from October 7, 2024, these vulnerabilities stem from insufficient data validation in the browser. Attackers could exploit these weaknesses. Issues such as layout overflow and improper implementation in the V8 engine have been observed, allowing attackers to access certain elements and potentially fix security flaws.

Edge users are now urged to exercise caution. The warning advises users to be vigilant when handling private data and to avoid opening sensitive information without taking proper precautions. To protect against these vulnerabilities, it is recommended that users immediately update their browsers. Along with the updates, bug fixes will also be provided. Microsoft Edge has gained significant popularity this year due to AI integration, but this has also made it an attractive target for hackers who can easily access data. If your system is running an outdated version, it becomes an easy target for hackers.

How to update Microsoft Edge:

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and click on the three-dot menu.
  2. Scroll down to the “Help and Feedback” option.
  3. Click on “About Microsoft Edge.”
  4. Select the “Update to Latest Version” option.
  5. Finally, update the browser.
