Maharaja’s Stellar China Debut
Vijay Sethupathi's *Maharaja* Shines at Chinese Box Office
Vijay Sethupathi’s action-packed thriller Maharaja has made an impressive debut at the Chinese box office. Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, this Tamil suspense film earned over ₹10 crore (approximately $1.18 million) on its opening day, including collections from preview screenings. With this achievement, Maharaja has become one of the top-performing Indian films in China post-pandemic.
The film premiered in China on November 29, earning ₹5.4 crore (approximately $635,000 or ¥4.6 million) from initial screenings. Before its official release, it had already collected ₹4.65 crore. According to local box office tracker ENT Group, Maharaja attracted over 100,000 viewers on its opening day and has been watched by a total of 220,000 viewers so far.
Positive ratings on local platforms have significantly boosted the film’s performance. Despite competing with major releases like Gladiator 2 and the local drama Her Story, Maharaja has carved a niche for itself in the hearts of Chinese audiences, thanks to its gripping storyline and stellar performances.
Originally released in India on June 14, Maharaja was a big hit at the domestic box office and later gained immense appreciation on OTT platforms. With its recent Chinese collections, the film’s global earnings have now crossed ₹116 crore.
