TRAI’s New Regulations: Crackdown on URL Sharing in SMS to Enhance User Security
"New Rules Effective from October 1 to Prevent Fraud and Misleading Messages; Telecom Operators Directed to Block Unregistered URLs"
TRAI frequently updates its regulations over time, and now once again, changes are being made with a focus on user security. TRAI is particularly vigilant about safeguarding mobile users and wants to immediately put a stop to activities that may harm them. Now, TRAI has decided to take action against those who send messages containing URLs. The telecom regulator has already issued orders to Jio, Vodafone, Airtel, and BSNL regarding this matter.
TRAI has clearly instructed all telecom operators to immediately block users sending such URLs. Additionally, URLs, OTT links, and APKs should be prevented from being shared through SMS traffic. The new rule is set to take effect from October 1, and actions are planned to be taken against violators. Through this measure, TRAI aims to establish a secure communication system for Indian consumers.
On August 20, TRAI issued an order regarding this. It grants access providers the authority to block URLs or APKs. Registered senders are allowed to whitelist their links. Over 70,000 whitelist links have been uploaded by more than 3,000 registered senders. If a URL is not whitelisted by October 1, it will not be allowed to be sent via SMS.
This step has been taken by TRAI to curb fraudulent and misleading SMS messages. TRAI had previously directed users promoting content via mobile to whitelist their URLs. This move was specifically introduced to maintain user trust in banking and e-commerce transactions.
