Govt Rules Out Special Plans for Users

"Telecom operators free to set tariffs; no plans for non-smartphone-specific schemes, says minister."

The government has made a significant statement regarding mobile recharge plans, clarifying that it cannot compel telecom companies to introduce separate plans for non-smartphone users. Currently, an average of ₹200 per month is spent by users to maintain a SIM card, which typically includes unlimited voice calling and some data benefits. However, not all consumers in the country can take advantage of these plans.

When asked about the possibility of introducing special plans, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that there are no ongoing considerations for such measures at this time.

Recently, telecom operators raised their tariff rates, prompting many users to start porting their numbers to other networks. The government has previously confirmed that it does not intend to intervene directly in decisions made by telecom operators. In matters related to tariffs, the government can only respond through TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). The revised ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) figures have been a positive development for telecom companies.

There are still many users who primarily use mobile phones for basic calling and SMS services. These users prefer low-cost plans, which often include service validity at affordable rates. Currently, maintaining a mobile number costs around ₹200 per month. While Jio offers economical plans for users who purchase Jio Phones, these benefits are not extended to Airtel and Vodafone customers. Consequently, many users with other mobile devices cannot access similar low-cost options.
