TRAI Introduces Affordable Calling-Only Plans
"Mandatory Low-Cost Plans for Non-Data Users by Telecom Operators"
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced significant relief for mobile users by mandating affordable “calling and messaging-only” recharge plans. Telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea will now be required to offer low-cost recharge plans specifically designed for users who only need calling and messaging services without mobile data. These plans could start as low as ₹10.
Many smartphone users today rely on Wi-Fi for internet access, especially in rural areas where users prefer simple calling and messaging options. However, such users are often forced to purchase data-inclusive plans due to the lack of alternatives. Responding to long-standing consumer demands, TRAI has directed telecom operators to introduce non-data plans and has amended tariff regulations accordingly.
Additionally, TRAI has extended the validity of special recharge coupons from 90 days to 365 days, providing further flexibility to users.
As per TRAI’s report, around 150 million feature phone users in India do not require mobile data. This includes a significant number of 2G users and those using dual SIM phones, for whom non-data plans would be particularly beneficial. This move is expected to address the needs of this substantial user base while fostering inclusivity and affordability in telecom services.
