Karnataka FDA Finds Banned Color in Green Pea

64 out of 114 samples test positive for harmful Tartrazine; FDA promises strict action.

A major revelation has emerged regarding food safety in Karnataka. The FDA collected 114 samples of green pea fritters, out of which 64 samples were found to contain Tartrazine, a banned coloring agent harmful to health.

According to a media report (ref.), FDA Commissioner Srinivas K. wrote a letter to the Chief Minister’s OSD on March 3. He stated that out of the 96 samples tested so far, 32 were found to be safe, while the reports of the remaining samples are still pending.

Last year, the health department had banned several artificial colors, including Tartrazine, from being used in food items. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, adulterated colors in food are considered unsafe. The FDA had ordered the collection of green pea fritter samples across the state last month, and by February 20, 70 samples had already been collected. Srinivas K. confirmed that officials were instructed to collect samples from across the state.

Tartrazine is an artificial color that appears lemon-yellow. Along with Sunset Yellow and Carmoisine, it was banned last year after being found in several food samples. These colors pose serious health risks, including allergies, asthma, and even cancer, particularly for children. Due to these risks, the FDA has strictly prohibited their use.

The presence of Tartrazine in green pea fritters is a serious concern, endangering public health. The FDA has assured strict action against vendors using adulterated colors, and legal action will be taken against them. The FDA has also urged the public to avoid consuming adulterated food. If anyone suspects food adulteration, they should immediately report it to the FDA. Your safety is our priority.
