Effective Home Remedies for Relieving Earache

Usually ear pain (kaan me dard) is caused by an infection or cold, but sometimes ear pain also occurs due to some other reasons. There is an Eustachian tube from the middle of the ear to the back of the throat. The Eustachian tube produces fluid between the ears, when the fluid production increases due to blockage of the tube, then pressure starts on the eardrum. This causes ear pain. If not treated, the fluid gets infected and causes infection in the ear, and this can increase your ear pain further.

The problem of ear pain in children is mostly seen when the ear canal is cleaned with cotton or any sharp object. This causes injury inside the ear. Sometimes pain also starts due to soap, shampoo or water remaining in the ear. Usually ear pain is not considered a sign of any serious problem, but it is very painful. In Ayurvedic texts, ear pain is called Karnashool. It can be caused by the contamination of Vata, Pitta, Kapha and blood. Due to improper diet and lifestyle, the air in the ear gets aggravated and moves abnormally by mixing with Vata, Pitta, Kapha and blood defects. Therefore, severe pain occurs all around the ear. 1. Warm Compress

  • What to do: Soak a cloth in warm water, wring it out, and place it over the ear for 10-15 minutes.

2. Olive Oil

  • What to do: Warm a few drops of olive oil (not too hot), and carefully drop it into the affected ear using a clean dropper.
  • Why it works: Olive oil can soothe irritation and reduce pain. It also helps soften earwax.

3. Garlic Oil

  • What to do: Heat crushed garlic in olive oil, strain the oil, and let it cool slightly. Put a few drops in the ear.
  • Why it works: Garlic has natural antibacterial properties that can help fight infection and relieve pain.

4. Steam Inhalation

  • What to do: Boil water, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam.
  • Why it works: It helps open the Eustachian tubes, relieving pressure and discomfort, especially if the earache is due to a sinus infection or congestion.

5. Cold Compress

  • What to do: Place an ice pack wrapped in a cloth over the affected ear for 10-15 minutes.
  • Why it works: Cold compresses can numb the area, reducing inflammation and pain.

6. Onion Juice

  • What to do: Warm a small amount of onion juice and place a few drops in the ear.
  • Why it works: Onions have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce ear pain and infection.

7. Hydrogen Peroxide

  • What to do: Use a few drops of diluted hydrogen peroxide in the ear, leave it for a minute, then tilt your head to let it drain out.
  • Why it works: It helps remove excess earwax and may reduce infection.

8. Ginger Juice

  • What to do: Apply warm ginger juice around the outer ear, but avoid putting it directly inside the ear.
  • Why it works: Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce swelling and pain.

9. Chewing Gum (for Airplane Ear)

  • What to do: Chew gum or yawn frequently during air travel or altitude changes.
  • Why it works: It helps balance the pressure in the Eustachian tubes, relieving ear discomfort.
