Why Sitting Too Long on the Toilet Can Harm Your Health
Some people enjoy reading newspapers while sitting on the toilet, while others can’t seem to part with their mobile phones even in the bathroom. Whatever the reason, this habit can pose serious health risks.
Although it may not seem concerning, experts warn that spending too much time on the toilet can lead to several health issues.
According to Dr. Lai Zhu, a colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, sitting on the toilet for long periods can cause hemorrhoids and weaken the pelvic muscles.
Dr. Farah Mounjur, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Stony Brook Medicine in Long Island, New York, suggests that 5 to 10 minutes is sufficient for bathroom time. Sitting on a toilet seat compresses the buttocks, and gravity pulls down on the lower half of the body. This increased pressure can disrupt blood circulation, causing blood to pool in the anal and rectal veins. As a result, these veins and blood vessels enlarge, potentially leading to hemorrhoids.
Prolonged sitting, especially while straining, significantly raises the risk of hemorrhoids. Dr. Mounjur explains that using mobile phones in the bathroom often causes people to lose track of time, leading to unnecessary straining. Dr. Zhu adds that this behavior is harmful to anorectal organs and the pelvic floor.
To avoid spending too much time on the toilet, refrain from taking mobile phones, books, or other distractions with you. If you experience difficulty with bowel movements, instead of sitting for extended periods, take a 10-minute walk. Additionally, maintain a healthy diet rich in fiber—such as oats and beans—and stay hydrated to prevent these issues.
